The chase for top honors in the Spec Racer Ford class of SCCA National action is slated to get more competitive in 2012, with Ford Racing announcing it will field a car for former pro sedan champion Jim Daniels.
With the ultimate goal of capturing the SCCA National Championship Runoffs gold medal in the 2012 Spec Racer Ford class, Daniels will join forces with Ford Racing for a full SCCA National program this coming season.
The new racing partnership comes as a result of Daniels and Doug Ford, who are both part of the RP Motorsport program in SCCA World Challenge, first talking about racing, then discussing running together. While the original plan was to compete in an SCCA Sedan class such E or F Production, which is Daniels' strong suit, the plan soon switched to the Spec Racer Ford, as Ford already had a car and equipment, and Daniels had previously raced in the class.
"I've owned two SRFs in years past, love the cars," stated Daniels. "I think I still have the St. Louis track record. I'm very glad to help Doug with his team ownership aspirations and look forward to the 2012 season. We have a ton of work to do and the competition is stiff, but I'm hopeful we can be a challenge for the talent in the class now."
"Jim and I have tossed around the idea of starting a team together and SRF being one of the most competitive classes in SCCA, as well as one of the highest number of participants seemed to be a great place to start," said Ford. "We know that this will be a huge challenge not only to start a team, but to be competitive in SRF and hopefully compete for the 2012 runoffs gold."
A native of Memphis, Tenn., Daniels will enter the 2012 SCCA National season behind the wheel of a SRF having already enjoyed great success both behind the wheel and outside of the cockpit. On the driving side of things, he is a former SCCA MX5 Cup Champion (2006 with five wins), SCCA National Championship Runoffs pole winner and runner-up (2004 in Showroom Stock C), multiple Spec Miata winner at the American Road Race of Champions (2002, 2004, and 2007), and Mazda factory driver in SCCA World Challenge and Grand-Am Championship (2008). On the other side of the pit wall, Daniels has made his mark as one of the most influential figures in the rise of the the Spec Miata, Pro Miata and MX5 racing, helped build and co-build over 50 cars, and acted as a leading driving instructor.
Preparations for the 2012 SCCA National season are already underway, with the Ford owned Spec Racer Ford being re-built from the ground up. Full details regarding schedule, sponsors, etc., are expected over the coming months. |
